SOLO DIARRA

Solo Diarra was born into a respected griot family from Burkina Faso, inheriting a rich musical heritage passed down through generations. From a young age, he was initiated into this millenary musical tradition, mastering traditional West African instruments including the djembe, ngoni, balafon, and calabash.

In 2015, Solo released his first EP, marking the beginning of his recording career.

His music is a powerful blend between old traditions and new musical expressions like Afro beat and African Manding-music. Diarra sings about his own life experiences and things he has gone through. He wants to bring hope & strength to the ones listening to his music.

Solo Diarra resides in Norway since 2010, where he works as a freelance musician.

The album marks the debut solo album from multi-instrumentalist Solo Diarra. The album’s title, meaning “be yourself” in Bambara, perfectly captures the essence of this groundbreaking work. This innovative 8-track collection skillfully weaves traditional West African sounds with contemporary jazz influences, creating a singular musical tapestry that reflects Diarra’s journey between worlds—from his deep African roots to his current home in Oslo, Norway.

«Yimenga» alternates between captivating instrumental pieces and powerful lyrical compositions, organically fusing traditional African instruments with guitar, drums and classical piano. More than just music, these songs serve as an impassioned anthem to Diarra’s beloved Burkina Faso, calling for unity and peace while emphasizing the vital importance of preserving cultural heritage and identity for future generations.

 

For over a decade, Solo has made Oslo, Norway his home, where he has become a fixture in the local music scene. He has performed at prestigious concert halls and festivals throughout the region, captivating audiences with his virtuosic playing and cultural authenticity. Beyond performing, Solo is also a skilled craftsman who hand-builds traditional instruments, preserving ancient techniques and knowledge.

Throughout his career, Solo has dedicated himself to a dual mission: safeguarding the ancient musical traditions of his ancestors while simultaneously exploring new artistic expressions that bridge cultural divides. This commitment to both preservation and innovation defines his unique contribution to the world music scene.
